Natural Insect Control for Garden

Prevent insect damage in gardens by discouraging their entry. This can be done by developing a healthy garden that acts as a natural defense. Just pull out and destroy infested plants that almost always attract insects.

A healthy soil promotes growth of healthy plants. Go in for natural composting methods, mulching and top-dressing soil with compost to ensure strong plants. A clean garden minimizes insect habitats especially if you keep it free of debris and weeds that become breeding places.

Use clean mulch. Seaweed mulch contains trace elements like iron, zinc, barium, calcium, sulfur and magnesium to promote healthy plants. Besides enhancing growth it offers plants the strength to withstand disease and repel slugs.

Interplant and rotate crops as insect pests are often plant specific. When plantings are mixed, pests are less likely to spread throughout a crop. Rotating crops each year is a common method to avoid re-infestation of pests which have over-wintered in the bed.

Keep foliage dry. Water early so foliage will be dry through the day. Wet foliage encourages insect and fungal damage. Go in for drip-irrigation to deliver water to roots without wetting the foliage.

If you've been working with infested plants, clean your tools before moving on to other garden areas. Proper disinfection reduces speed of invading insects. Here are more tips for natural insect control for keeping gardens clear of pests.

  • Use lime juice as organic pesticide.
  • Use garlic, onion and pepper as organic insect repellent.
  • Gloved hands act as natural pest control to look for, remove, or crush tiny insects that invade garden plants.
  • Place insect repelling plants like marigolds, tansy, sage, mint, garlic, catnip, basil and onions to repel unwanted bugs.
  • Encourage insects like ladybugs, ground beetles, lacewings, spiders, centipedes, harvestman, wasps and tachinid flies that feed on other plant destroying insects.
  • Repel mosquitoes by growing plants like citronella/lemon grass, lemon balm, lavender, marigolds, garlic, basil and rosemary.
