Chemical Insect Control Technique

Pests abound all over the planet in one form or the other. Be they insects, bacteria, mites, viruses or rodents, all become pests if found in unwanted areas or unusually huge numbers. Pests have the potential to wipe out entire economies and make people starve if allowed to propagate and go unrestrained.

Chemical pest control therefore becomes a necessity. Increasing industrialization and escalating populations require natural sources of food to increase manifold necessitating commercialization of agriculture. Chemical pesticides become worthwhile to not only remove pests but to act as repellents for a period of time.

Chemical insecticides help to counter all kinds of pest infestations and are classified into two groups according to their potency. The broad spectrum pesticides have the capability to eliminate or incapacitate a wide array of species. The narrow spectrum ones destroy only a small group of species.

However, the strengths of these insecticides, unfortunately and ironically, are also their biggest weaknesses. These poisons act uniformly, with destructive results, on harmful and friendly animals alike. They have even caused the extinction of many bees, butterflies and other insects from the plant.

However, manufacturers now advise the user about the amount of poisons to be applied, how and when they have to be used, and how they should be handled. Research is underway to make them environment friendly. Given all the drawbacks, the role of chemical insecticides ensures food security.
